It's Not Thirst, It's Attention

That's the trap. By the time you actually feel thirsty, you've already spent hours mildly under-watered. The goal isn't to drink more in a heroic afternoon catch-up. It's to keep a slow, steady trickle going so you never hit that point in the first place. And steady trickles come from the environment doing the reminding, not from you.
If You Can't See It, You Won't Drink It
Most full-bottle problems are really line-of-sight problems. The bottle is off to the side, behind the monitor, or down by your bag where it never crosses your field of view. Out of sight, genuinely out of mind.
Move it into the space between you and your screen, close enough that your hand brushes it when you reach for the mouse. When the bottle sits in the path of what you're already doing, you'll take small sips without deciding to. You don't need more discipline. You need the bottle in your way.

Pin It to Something You Already Do
You don't need an app pinging you every twenty minutes. You need to hang the habit on things that already happen. Take a sip every time you end a call. Drink before you open a new tab. Top the bottle up on your way back from every trip to the kitchen, whether it needs it or not.
Anchoring a small action to an existing one is how habits stick without effort. Your day is already full of natural punctuation marks, the end of a meeting, the send of an email, the stretch after a long stretch of typing. Attach a sip to a few of them and the drinking becomes automatic.
The Afternoon Slump Is Often Just This
That three o'clock fog, the heavy eyelids, the reach for another coffee, is frequently mild dehydration wearing the costume of tiredness. The symptoms overlap almost perfectly: low energy, a dull headache, trouble concentrating.
Next time the slump lands, try a full glass of water before the coffee and give it ten minutes. Sometimes the coffee was never the thing you needed. It's a cheap experiment, and on the days it works, you save yourself a jittery afternoon and a 4 p.m. crash you didn't have to have.
Make the Refill the Easy Part
If refilling means a long walk across the house, you'll ration your water to avoid the trip. Shrink the distance. Keep a carafe or a second large bottle at the desk so a refill is an arm's reach, not an expedition.
The less friction between you and the next sip, the less you have to think about any of this. That's the whole game with hydration at a desk: not more resolve, just fewer obstacles between you and the water you already meant to drink.
